Kuyavian Wednesday (Środa Kujawska)

Cuyahoga Wednesday is a place in time and space where lovers of communal singing and musical traditions meet. The group operates at the Bydgoszcz Przedmieście Cultural Center in Toruń under the direction of Katarzyna Rosik. They get to know the Kuyavian repertoire thanks to archival recordings of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferowa Ethnographic Museum in Torun, Polish Radio and Radio PiK. The group has been working on Kujawski songs since February 2024, and in addition to working with the archives, took part in workshops with Ewa Grochowska and Justyna Piernik. Wednesday Kujawski debuted in June 2024 during the review of the 51st Kuyavian Folklore Festival in Ciechocinek, winning a special award from Kuyavian Folklore Festival Director Michal Gajewski.

During Wednesday meetings we learn about old songs, musical culture, customs and contexts related to the rituals and daily life of the countryside, which are often part of the history of our parents, grandmothers and grandfathers, and by extension, our own. We derive joy from communing with beautiful Kuyavian melodies, but also from singing together.
